I am a self-taught American-born artisan who has been handcrafting hats for over 20 years. I design my hats one at a time from textiles and found objects salvaged from 'second-hand' sources. Working with reclaimed materials enables me to produce limited edition pieces of distinctive, durable, wearable art.

My work is inspired by several global cultures and time periods. Currently much of my work reflects design motifs from Persian manuscripts and Turkish architectural elements, discoveries from my recent travels. You will see influences in my work from countries I have studied but not yet visited, including Northern Europe and Asia, as well as time periods ranging from medieval and renaissance, to NeoVictorian and Steampunk.

This fusion of cultural and historical influences encourages me to craft hats that are unique and timeless ... so much so that some of my customers have said that “ one cannot own too many of these hats” and have become avid collectors of my work.

August Phoenix is a women-owned business and a registered trade name in the State of Washington. I am a member of the Northwest Art Alliance and The Textile and Fiber Arts List (TAFA).
